Start->Chapter 1->Episode 3 To Lucinda
I attended a charity event today, one that is open only by special invitation and while you might consider why would a man such as I bother to attend such a dismal function there is something you would need to understand about how my world is structured. These occasions exist for every purpose except what they appear to serve, do not misunderstand me, of course the poor unfortunates and other lesser beings receive whatever bounty is garnered by the capricious generosity of the glitterati that day. It is the corners of the room that interest beings such as myself for it is here that kingmakers, players, vendors and buyers come together, it is here where brokered deals, information exchange and occasional destructions hum in the shadows.
There are times when I attend such functions and discover fools who obstruct the process of business have wasted my effort or the host is some nouveau moron whose riche has raddled their thoughts into believing we are actually concerned with charity at a charity event. It is with these concerns in mind, for the food is generally unpalatable to the discerning tastes of a gentleman and the conversation puerile to the point of insulting, that to prevent utter boredom I asked my good friend Caspar Royale to attend the luncheon with me.
Some bright spark with the goodness that only a self-congratulatory social upstart can exude decided that to give us a tiny engraved golden teaspoon to celebrate the event would be an excellent touch. To give the dolt their dues it did please the glitterati enough that they would leave wrapped smugly in their blanket of self-indulgent good will. I tossed mine which entrances a comely server, luckily, my sister was nowhere to be seen for she did tend to frown upon my public dalliances and Liselle was never one to associate with those outside our realm.
However I find associating with the lower realms very rewarding, and I do so frequently with two purposes in mind, one to keep a finger on the pulse of gossip and the other far more carnal in nature. I am after all a man not used to having my desires thwarted and I am rich in desires. The comely creature tossed her shiny dark hair and told me she wasn't that kind of girl, but when they see whom they are dealing with, they are usually that kind of girl. I do enjoy the mock feisty, half resisting charades of the working classes for with these girls, no rarely means no once they glimpse the wallet.
I had my driver collect me and then drive to the side alley where the staff leaves, for to depart blatantly with the girl via the front entrance is not how I deal with this type of dalliance. She left her friends giggling at the door and we had struck the unspoken accord that was the usual play between our social groups. I gave the girl a few more trinkets that I kept stashed for this very purpose then obtained what I needed later that afternoon, the exchange was slightly mundane but there are few who do not make me yawn. Perhaps I will leave her for Caspar to play with, as he is less discriminating. The only downside of the day was a slight mark on my shoes, which just goes to show, the filth of society are on the rise.
