Start->Chapter 4->Episode 24 To Lucinda
I am amazed at how the lesser beings of this town believe they are going to outwit me at any given time, I wonder if they have suddenly taken leave of their senses or are just genetically prone to stupidity. I knew about the plans of the Vanderhag’s younger son long before he did so it was with no surprise when the hag rang me in desperate fury demanding that I stop his elopement and I admit for a moment I considered quashing his little escape but the tone of Vanderhag pretty much sealed her fate.
One does not make demands of a Dubois, not in any context, nor at any time and although I realised this would be at odds with the plans my little cousin might have, a demand of me must never go unpunished. Since I was not her lackey I saw no reason why I should continue to listen to her spew her venom and told her acidly I would consider her request and hung up. Seconds later I had minxie on the phone as I could not allow this golden moment to pass by without some attempt at manipulating her and I had the great pleasure in suggesting that one word would be all it took for me to ensure that Royce and his vacant little puss were left undisturbed to pursue their fate.
Imagine my surprise when minxie turned me down flat, her voice tart with anger, she told me that she was pleased they had outsmarted me and the Vanderhag and she was not interested in anything I had to say. I could felt the blackness of my rage seep in to my veins and brought up the subject of the mountain simply for the joy of hearing the fury in her voice. She tried to conceal her emotion but I know my minxie down to her internal horrors, so I savoured the anger of her feigned cheerfulness and I also knew with a delicious certainty that I would affect her for the rest of her life. Minxie my dear I will end my days making you pay for your insults.
