The Pulse of Life

The Pulse of Life

I could feel the undercurrent pulsing through the universe like an esoteric hum whose range could only be heard by one. I had felt this vibration twice before, like a fire in my bones it came to warn me of transformations of my universe, like some bleak omen hovering upon its tragedy. The first time had been when my father had removed Liselle from our household unceremoniously as he was a man who would endure many internal vagaries but when an external influence deigned to upset what was his to control he ensured it was terminated promptly. Liselle was parted from Jago while our familial dalliance had not even penetrated the fog of his indifference.

The second time was when my uncle Axel had brought home the thorn he enjoyed calling his new bride in order no doubt to thwart any dynastic plans I had of acquiring his fortune in the event of his death. Which almost was untimely, considering the introduction of this ex-stripper as a new Dubois and heir to his considerable assets, Ladonna was one of the few spokes Axel had enjoyed putting in my wheels. I was much younger then and did not realise that power was merely a game played well and eventually relinquished my murderous rage and set about amassing a new fortune. Axel was so impressed that he left me the manager of his estate, something Ladonna had no reason to change and I learned a valuable lesson, it always winds up mine in the end.

A lesson my precious minxie will learn once she comprehends that she is part of the Dubois heritage and we never ever let go of one of our own. If only I were able to conceive why the humming was back and what its portent was in my life and so I found myself chasing after little flights of information about minxie as I knew this was a premonition concerning her entrance into our family. Minxie however had not left her home in two days, she had received several visitors, and the last was fairly predictable. Lynx in one her moments of great ennui had decided to amuse herself with the brainless younger Vandersop, an inevitable situation as I knew that apeboy could amuse her for only so long and the only one left to play with would be the newly wed. His state of wedded bliss would only serve to mark his attractiveness and Lynx would have enjoyed being the device of his disintegration. She did what she did best and was caught as she usually is and enjoyed the entire disaster while it was full of tearful recrimination. Once the wife had left she bored of the boy and tossed him as she had his partner. No doubt the fluff head of a wife had gone to whine to Minxie about the weak boy that anyone could have envisioned playing with Lynx.

I spent the remainder of my day listening to the world around me vibrate, acutely aware of this communiqué for although the rest of the world lived in a self induced oblivion I was pulsating to the tune of my destiny.
